Candle Care 101

Candles of any size, shape, or scent are beautiful additions to any home and can brighten an entire room, but they are also unique pieces of art that need to be cared for in order to get the most out of them. We at Home Sweet Candle Barn have put together an easy-to-follow guide so that you may have the best possible experience with your candles....we've got you covered!

First Light

When you receive your new candle, let it burn long enough to allow the melted wax on the surface to reach the edge of the jar. This may take 2-4 hours depending on the size of your candle.

After your first burn, we recommend burning your candle for no longer than 4 hours at a time for maximum quality and longevity. Once your candle has 1/4" of wax remaining, we recommend you switch to your next yummy candle!

Storage

Candles like the dark! You may be familiar with this one: always store your candles in a cool, dry, and dark place. Storing candles in direct sunlight or harsh indoor lighting for long periods of time may cause them to fade or warp.  Even though all of our candles are white, this is still a good tip to follow!

Wicks, Wicks, Wicks

Trim them! This is a crucial part of candle care that, if not followed, can potentially be a hazard. Use a Home Sweet Candle Barn wick trimmer to keep your wick about ¼ - ½ inch. This will allow for a more even burn and will help prevent the wick from mushrooming or creating soot.

If the wick is not trimmed, the flame of the candle may grow too large and begin to smoke or flicker, which are signs that the flame isn’t properly controlled.  If this occurs, simply extinguish the flame, wait for the candle to completely cool, and trim the wick with either a wick trimmer or scissors.

Cleaning

If dust forms on the surface of your candle, be sure to clean it off before lighting. To do this, use a soft cloth that is either dry or lightly dampened with water.  You can also use a piece of nylon.

Snuff It Out

A Home Sweet Candle Barn snuffer is recommended when extinguishing your candle. However, blowing out your candle works, too (just be careful not to splatter the hot wax!)

Wax Melts

Since we use strictly natural coconut wax for our candles and melts with no additives, soy or paraffin, our wax stays softer and more creamy to touch. To remove wax cubes out of the clamb shell effortlessly, we find by storing our wax melts in the fridge, helps to keep the wax more firm and much easier to remove. It isn't necessary to do so, just a little tip!
